Position Summary:

St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Raleigh, NC is seeking a Director of Justice and Peace to provide oversight of justice and peace ministries in areas of justice formation, service and mission in the wider community, and advocacy. Through these ministries, the Director of Justice and Peace fosters the social mission of the Church, raises awareness of social issues of concern, and promotes an understanding of Catholic Social Teaching.

 

Key responsibilities:

  • Works collaboratively with clergy, parish and school staff, and volunteers in promoting Catholic Social Teaching and the social mission of the Church through service projects, mission trips, small group programs, community events, as well as through the bulletin, newsletter, social media, and other forms of communication
  • Analyzes local, national, and global social issues and needs in light of Catholic Social Teaching and creates, leads, and facilitates programs and ministries that motivates timely parishioner involvement in efforts for action, reflection, and transformation
  • Plans and manages training, formation, and development of justice and peace ministry leaders
  • Recruits and forms parish volunteers to serve in social ministries, mission trips, and advocacy campaigns
  • Serves as a liaison to the Justice and Peace Grant Committee and guides the distribution of parish donations to community organizations
  • Networks with and maintains strong relationship with leadership of the Diocese of Raleigh, community based coalitions (e.g., ONE Wake), agencies, organizations, and area faith congregations to collaboratively address issues of justice and peace
  • Plan and organize major department events such as the Fair Trade Market, All-Staff Service Day, Lenten Service Sundays, and the Earth Day Celebration
  • Oversees the work and goals of staff person who serves as Coordinator of Justice and Peace
  • Provides oversight to the material donation drives
  • In partnership with Director of Parish Life and St. Vincent DePaul, coordinates emergency assistance to those seeking financial assistance, food, housing, and other basic need
  • Develops and adheres to ministry budgets and goals supported by Administrative Asst.

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in theology, education, sociology, or related field of study.
  • 3-5 years of professional work experience related to parish or diocesan-based social ministry, charitable service, advocacy, mission work, pastoral ministries or a related field.
  • Strong relational, communication, computer, organization, budgetary, and leadership skills.
  • A thorough understanding of Catholic Social Teaching and its application to a wide scope of contemporary social issues.
  • Comfortable speaking to small and large groups.
  • Active, fully initiated, practicing Catholic dedicated to collaborative ministry and the advancement of the vision of the Church as promoted by the Second Vatican Council.
  • Some night and weekend work may be required.
  • Employment is contingent upon applicant satisfactorily passing criminal background and reference checks.
  • Must complete diocese-sponsored Safe Environment Training within 30 days of hire.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in theology, education, sociology, or related field.
  • Experience in small group facilitation and teaching.
  • Experience in leading advocacy campaigns and community-based organizing, as well as project and event planning.
